This could be a web app with decent functionality (user account, upload item pics, add tags to pics, track the value of items, upload copy of the insurance policy, potentially share the itemized list with insurer or cut a CD and mail to document a claim). While the functionality covers a few areas, it is limited and wouldn't threaten unending feature creep.
Costs would be development, marketing, and hosting. Monetization would be ad serving and potentially a fee to cut a CD/DVD.
Common mistakes
One common mistake homeowners make: Failing to record the contents of their home.
"One of the first things you need to do is make sure you keep track of all of the things you have in your home of value. My sister, a prosecuting attorney in New Hampshire, told me a story the other day that got me thinking about timing in life, and about goals.
She has been talking for years about joining a private law firm because she believes she might make more money than she does as an elected official, and she was discussing a new job with a local firm when her contact there told her she was overqualified for the attorney openings they had at the moment. They told her: Check back later.

Where once I would have offered resume advice or given up a few names of connected people I know or even just talked up the relative virtues of one company or another, I am now adamant: Don’t go to work for a company.
Start a company. Partner with a friend and launch a venture. Hire on as an arms’-length consultant, or anything else, but don’t go to work for anybody else.
Companies don’t care about people, in spite of plenty of rhetoric to the contrary; they care about money, period.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but any employee has to remember that, to a company — you might as well be so much aluminum, advertising space or computer spare parts.
And this attitude, quite prevalent in the smallest of organizations, just magnifies exponentially in direct proportion to the size of the organization. One blip on the financial radar, and 10 percent of the workforce (re: the people) are gone in an effort to "strengthen" the organization. People — real living, breathing human beings — have become corporate liabilities.
I have quite recently learned a valuable lesson: Come what may — failure, success or muddling through — if you work for yourself you’ll never be too inexperienced, never overqualified for a position, and always appreciated. Win, lose or draw, the most important asset in your own business will always be you.

For the three months ended March 31, SuccessFactors said losses widened to $12.6M from $7.6M in the comparable period of 2006. The company expects to incur additional losses for the foreseeable future. In the same period, SuccessFactors' sales grew to $12.4M, from $6.3M in the prior year. Ironically, SuccessFactors said its independent public accounting firm noted material weaknesses in the company's internal control over HR related issues like stock-based compensation, deferred commissions. The company said the firm also commented on the company's lack of accounting policies and process narratives and the lack of segregation of duties. SuccessFactors said it is taking steps to correct the weaknesses.
SuccessFactors, a profitable five-year-old startup in San Mateo, Calif., takes in an estimated $100 million in annual revenue by selling a suite of simple Web-based tools that automate important but previously paper-driven management chores - performance reviews, succession planning, and compensation.
Ultimately the service helps to match employee skills with company objectives. North Carolina-based Quintiles, a pharmaceutical services firm with 17,000 employees, deployed SuccessFactors last year to better pair worker aptitudes with jobs; its annual employee churn rate subsequently fell by nearly a third.

Buoyed by the recent $1B buyout of its open source brother MySQL, Open source network and systems management software firm Zenoss says it has crossed the 500K downloads threshold and his raised an $11M round. The investment was led by Grotech Capital, a leading venture firm with more than $1 billion under management. Existing investors Intersouth Partners, Boulder Ventures and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development also participated.
Erik Dahl launched Zenoss development in 2002 and in August 2005 founded Zenoss Inc. with Bill Karpovich. Zenoss provides corporate backing for the development of Zenoss Core, which is freely available to anyone to download and use without license fees. The firm offers paid support subscriptions and training services to generate revenue.
Zenoss competes with other pen source systems management products like GroundWork Open Source, Hyperic and Qlusters. How is Zenoss different? Says Bill Karpovich:
"Companies like GroundWork are similar to the Red Hat approach, where a company gathers up the pieces and puts support behind it. Open Source's Zenoss Boasts 500K Downloads + $11M Investment

Buoyed by the recent $1B buyout of its open source brother MySQL, Open source network and systems management software firm Zenoss says it has crossed the 500K downloads threshold and his raised an $11M round. The investment was led by Grotech Capital, a leading venture firm with more than $1 billion under management. Existing investors Intersouth Partners, Boulder Ventures and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development also participated.
Erik Dahl launched Zenoss development in 2002 and in August 2005 founded Zenoss Inc. with Bill Karpovich. Zenoss provides corporate backing for the development of Zenoss Core, which is freely available to anyone to download and use without license fees. The firm offers paid support subscriptions and training services to generate revenue.
Zenoss competes with other pen source systems management products like GroundWork Open Source, Hyperic and Qlusters. How is Zenoss different? Says Bill Karpovich:

They need a Mid-Level Network Admin that can do a little of everything. Windows, Exchange, Cisco Routers, SAN, VoIP Phones. One minute you might be pushing cable and the next you might be designing a server farm.
The people who are running this show have been very succesful building companies in the past. They are people I know and trust immensely.
Pre-IPO shares are being granted. It's a Beautiful Facility as well. (huge game room!) Only entreprenurial people need apply. If you need a ton of direction, don't bother.

But so much "elegance" sprouted up in so many woebegone places, that plastic flamingos, like velvet Elvis paintings, became a symbol of tackiness and. ..
"... cheesy kitsch," says Robert Thompson, a professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University. "The pink flamingo has spent well over half its life as a gag."
Which helps explain why the Union Products plant, which once cranked out 5,000 flamingo pairs every day, is shutting down.
"It's just not feasible for me to make them any more, economically," says Union Products President Dennis Plante.

But you aren't yet an expert. It takes much more time (about 5000 hours) to do that.

If you aren't careful and try something entirely new and different, chances are it will fail - however good you think the idea is.
