Brainstorming competitive thermostat product: specs:
wifi to internet
measure the room temp
cheap LCD or 1 blinking LED for diagnosis

upgrade:
2 stage furnace control
extra battery for backup
light/motion sensor to help learning

upgrade control:
X10 networking/control
bluetooth for additional mechanism to control

upgrade sensors:
extra hardwired temp measurement for behind unit facing wall
humidity
oxygen %
carbon monoxide w/ audible alarm
gas (nat gas, propane) w/ audible alarm
smoke w/ audible alarm

companion website & apps:
upload current stats to website
configure & control
reports, trends (pull in outside temps)
website/apps free (can put in ads)

learn (intelligence hosted on website):
auto $ saving mode when sensing nobody home
start condititioning when mobile phone GPS shows person is nearing home

other:
consider subsidized thermostat if user allows microphone that will listen for radio/tv playing.  make it free if they will put listening/people monitor device in TV rooms.
allow smartphone app to be an additional temperature sensor, for phones with thermostat OR sell standalone temp sensor.

Home brew:

Hardware ~100.  thermostat directly controls my HVAC unit, which has a standard four-wire interface. One wire is common, and there is one wire for each of Heat, Cool (A/C), and Fan. I'm using an LM35 to measure the temperature, three relays to connect the HVAC, a nice 20x2 LCD display for status, and some buttons and switches, all mounted into a project box. Since the Arduino has a built-in USB interface, I use that to provide status back to the computer, and allow the computer to issue commands.

Building A Thermostat Using Arduino
arduino, a few solid state relays, and a temperature sensor from adafruit.

$108 I bought a Dallas Semiconductor 18B20 digital temperature sensor ($4), along with the relay I needed for the second thermostat switch ($2), a wall-wart AC adapter to power the Arduino ($6), and a 5-V wall wart to operate the relay ($6).
